Austin Police ID Man Killed After First Rear-Ending A Vehicle, Struck By Another

Brandon Keith Martinez, 34, initially rear-ended a car before being struck by an oncoming vehicle in the other lane, police said.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police have identified the man who died in North Austin after what began as a simple fender bender last month.

The Sept. 25 incident occurred at about 5:15 a.m. along the 5500 block of North Capital of Texas Highway southbound. A preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2014 Chevrolet Camaro was stopped in hte outside lane at the red light on southbound North Capital of Texas Highway at Courtyard Drive when another driver in a white 2013 Cadillac struck the stopped vehicle from behind.

The force of the impact caused the Cadillac to end up in the inside lane, where it was struck on the passenger's side by a southbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck traveling southbound.

The driver of the Cadillac, identified as Brandon Keith Martinez, 34, was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The incident marked Austin’s 48th fatal traffic crash and the 50th fatality of 2017, police noted. At this time in 2016, there were 51 fatal traffic crashes and 52 traffic fatalities, police added.
