Austin Police ID Man Who Died After Mopac Traffic Death
Police say John Monroe Guiling, 86, slammed into the back of another car that had yielded to an emergency vehicle on April 14.
AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the man who died after slamming into a car when he failed to yield to an emergency vehicle earlier this month.
The incident occurred just after 11 a.m. on April 14 along the 11200 block of North Mopac southbound. A preliminary police investigation showed that a 2014, gray Mitsubishi sedan was traveling southbound in the inside lane of the 11200 block of North Mopac southbound when the driver stopped to yield the right of way to a passing emergency vehicle. Meanwhile the driver of a white Chevrolet pickup failed to keep a safe driving distance, striking the Mitsubishi from behind.
The driver of the Chevrolet, John Monroe Guiling, 86, was rushed to St. David's Round Rock Hospital, where he would later die of his injuries nine days later, on April 23, at 6:20 p.m.

The incident marked Austin’s 23rd fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in 24 fatalities so far this year. At this time in 2018, there were 19 fatal traffic crashes and 20 traffic fatalities, police added.
