Austin Police ID Victim In Fatal Wreck, 2 Motorists Charged
Devin Nethery, 22, charged with intoxication manslaughter in I-35 wreck that killed Dean Hood, 27; Kelsi Weatherby charged with DWI.
NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Tuesday released more details on a North Austin traffic fatality the occurred this week, including identifying the victim, a motorist now charged with intoxication manslaughter and another driver charged with DWI in a deadly chain reaction involving three cars.
At the request of Patch, police released a revamped narrative detailing the accident scene:
"The preliminary investigation shows that a red, 2013 Volvo 4-door was travelling southbound in the center lane approaching the Cesar Chavez intersection in the 100 block of N. IH-35 frontage followed by a black, 2016 Hyundai Elantra driven by Kelsi Weatherby. A red, 2013 Chrysler 200 4-door, driven by Devin Nethery, struck the Elantra from behind causing damage to all three vehicles. Nethery and Weatherby were both transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Dean Hood was pronounced deceased at the scene. Devin Nethery, age 22, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Kelsi Weatherby, age 27, was arrested for DWI."

On Wednesday, Patch asked police if Hood was a passenger in Weatherby's vehicle at the time of the collision, but officials did not immediately respond. A Patch reader commented on the Patch Facebook page that Hood was with Weatherby in the same vehicle, not in the red Volvo as police previously suggested.

The incident marked Austin’s 19th fatal traffic crash of 2018, resulting in twenty fatalities this year, police said. At this time last year, there were 21 fatal traffic crashes with an equal number of traffic fatalities., police added.
