Austin Police Seek Public's Help Locating Sexual Assault Suspect

Woman using ride-sharing app for lift downtown got into van mistakenly believing it was the driver she had requested.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Wednesday said they are seeking the public's help in locating a sexual assault suspect.

The request stems from a March 19 incident along the 11400 block of North Mopac Expressway northbound when a woman entered a vehicle she believed had arrived to pick her up after using a ride-sharing app. The woman dispatched a car using a ride-sharing app as she waited outside The Domain shopping center at around 1 a.m. to be picked up to meet friends downtown, police said.

The woman then got into a white van she believed to be her ride, but soon after received a text from the actual ride-share driver who was waiting at the location where she requested to be picked up, according to police. she continued riding with the suspect, who then proceeded to pull over somewhere along MoPac, the victim told police.

After pulling over, police said the suspect sexually assaulted the victim in the back of the van.

The suspect is described as a black male between 30 and 40 years of age standing at about five feet, ten inches. He is said to weight about 180 pounds with an athletic build and bald head with brown eyes. The suspect's vehicle is described as an older model van with a well-maintained, tan interior.
