NORTH AUSTIN, TX — A child died at an area hospital after being hit by a car in a North Austin trailer park Saturday.

The incident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. at 1401 E. Rundberg Lane. At a subsequent press conference, senior police officer Christopher Irwin said police, fire and EMS crews responded to the scene after a 911 call was placed.

Medics began to perform life-saving measures on the girl, but she was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after her arrival, Irwin said. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with investigators, and no arrest was made, Irwin said. The officer added that it appears alcohol consumption played no role in the incident.

Given the preliminary nature of the investigation, Irwin was unable to confirm witness accounts. A reporter at the press conference asked Irwin to verify the victim was under the age of five, but Irwin declined to confirm the information. However, in a tweet by Austin-Travis County EMS officials, the girl's age was placed at under five years old.

Irwin also was asked to confirm eyewitness accounts it was the father of the girl who accidentally ran over her, and again he declined to answer.

With the weather pleasant as it was on Saturday, children are prompted to go outside and play, heightening the need for drivers to pay more attention, Irwin said. He urged motorists to be extra vigilant for children as they drive in neighborhoods.
