Searching for the next Police Chief began with a survey of the community and current Pflugerville Police Department employees, who said their top three desired qualities were skilled communicator, demonstrated commitment to officer well-being and safety and experience recruiting and retaining quality personnel. During a nationwide search, more than 90 candidates applied and finalists participated in assessment exercises and interviews with police department personnel, city staff and members of the Pflugerville community. The sole finalist that emerged from this process was Chief O’Malley, who has more than 21 years of experience in public safety and has been a Commander with the Pflugerville Police Department since July 2020.

Throughout his career, Chief O’Malley has served the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshall’s Service, and now the Pflugerville Police Department. Prior to coming to the Pflugerville Police Department, he directly oversaw operations for over 200 officers and staff, embracing new technologies and policies focused on transparency, adopting a more progressive approach to less lethal methodology and criminal investigations.
