Beautifully painted orange and black with white spots - the monarch butterfly is one of the most recognizable butterfly species; however, according to the National Wildlife Federation, the monarch population has declined by approximately 90 percent since the 1990s. Seeing a need for education and advocacy for this majestic species, Pflugerville community member, Sonia Koschoreck, reached out to our Parks and Recreation staff to establish the Monarch Sanctuary Project. When she submitted a proposal for this project to us, Sonia said “I posted my vision up on my pollinator forums on social media, and in less than an hour, I had over 200 responses from people wanting to donate see, advice, time, materials and money.” Through this amazing support, nine months later we have a thriving monarch butterfly sanctuary, that has withstood ice, snow and rain.

The sanctuary is located at the intersection of Gilleland Creek Trail and Brookhollow Trail, just northwest of Pfluger Park in Kuempel Park. This spring brought 4 species of butterflies, countless species of dragonflies and pollinators and 12 successful monarch metamorphosis. There are 150 native nectar plants and 300 native milkweed seedlings. Visit to observe a growing ecosystem as it changes through the seasons.

If you are passionate about the environment we have opportunities for volunteer work, so please contact us.
