County to Widen Road Connecting Round Rock, Northwest Austin

Starting in 2016, a new project will expand RM 620 from four to six lanes and add a median

A small corridor between Round Rock and Northwest Austin is expected to receive major upgrades starting next year.

RM 620, the four lane stretch of road only 2.74 miles long, receives up to 40,000 vehicles a day, a number expected to rise to 55,000 by 2035, reported the Austin American-Statesman.

To handle the increase in traffic, which is putting a strain on the road, Williamson County has proposed improvements that would widen the road from four to six lanes, from Cornerwood to Deep Wood drives, according to a Round Rock government release.

Construction for the project is expected to begin in the summer of 2016. Once construction is complete, expected late 2017 or early 2018, RM 620 will feature two 12-foot lanes and one 14-foot lane in each direction, curb and gutter and a raised center median. Other improvements have also been proposed such as left and right-turn lanes, culverts, water-quality facilities, retaining walls and the construction of sidewalks along the north side of RM 620, according to the release.

The purpose of the project is to increase both safety and mobility on RM 620.
