Details On Fiery North Austin Crash Revealed

A car stopped in the center lane of Interstate 35 late Thursday before being rear-ended and bursting into flames, killing both occupants.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday released details of a fiery traffic crash the previous that resulted in the deaths of two people.

On Jan. 4 just before midnight along the 5600 block of North Interstate 35 northbound, a 2018 Kenworth T680 with a 53-foot box trailer and a 2001 GMC Jimmy were traveling northbound on I-35 when the latter vehicle stopped in the center land for unknown reasons before being rear-ended by the Kenworth T680.

The impact caused the GMC to burst into flames, killing both its occupants. The deceased are an unidentified man and woman.

Police continue to investigate the case. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5594. Those with information also can submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

The incident marked the city's first fatal traffic crash of 2018, resulting in the two fatalities. At this time in 2017, there was one fatal traffic crash and one traffic fatality, police said.
