Driver Who Caused Death Of Police Officer In North Austin Wreck Draws New Charge

Ana Marie Prado, 51, was driving with a suspended license when she cut through a funeral procession Amir Abdul-Khaliq was guiding.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX -- The driver who collided with an Austin police officer during a funeral procession and causing his death this month was charged Thursday with driving with a suspended license.

The Sept. 1 crash occurred on Burnet Road near Ohlen Road. Office Amir Abdul-Khaliq, 46, was on a motorcycle guiding a funeral procession when Ana Marie Prado, 51, turned left in a gap in traffic, police previously reported.

The resulting impact landed the police officer at the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries four days later. Police initially cited the driver for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, but later dismissed the charge -- a dismissal aimed at allowing police more time to investigate and explore more serious charges, according to reports.

Prado now faces 180 days in jail if convicted. According to a two-page arrest affidavit referenced by the Austin American-Statesman, Prado has previously been convicted of the same charge and faces enhanced penalties as a result.

Moreover, the Prado's license was initially suspended after being convicted for drunk driving in Williamson County in 2010, the newspaper reported. Three months before the crash involving the officer, Prado's license was suspended again for failure to pay state fees, according to the report.
