Improperly Discarded Smoking Materials Blamed For Residents-Displacing North Austin Blaze

The fire occurred at the Walnut Creek crossing apartment complex at 2000 Cedar Bend Drive.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Discarded smoking materials are being blamed for a fire that displaced five residents at a North Austin apartment complex over the weekend.

The fire started on a third-floor balcony at the Walnut Creek Crossing apartment complex, 2000 Cedar Bend Dr., at around 9 p.m. on Saturday night, the Austin American-Statesman reported. The fire damaged an exterior wall, portions of the attic as well as parts of two adjacent units, according to fire officials.

Damage to the property was estimated at $50,000. The Statesman reported that Red Cross officials were assisting the displaced residents with housing and related needs. None of the residents was injured as a result of the fire.
