Man Charged After Fleeing Multi-Vehicle North Austin Wreck

Police say Kenneth Demarcus Burch, 22, sped through an intersection before hitting several vehicles and fled into woods before being caught.

NORTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — A man has been charged after fleeing from a four-vehicle crash over the weekend that left a person seriously injured, police said.

Kenneth Demarcus Burch, 22, was arrested after the crash in the northwest part of the city on Friday, according to a report in the Austin American-Statesman. He has since been charged with accident involving an injury, a third-degree felony punishable by between two and 10 years in prison, according to Travis County Jail records. His bail has been set at $25,000, records show.

The incident occurred at 7:15 a.m. on Parmer Lane and Silver Creek Drive. There, police said, a Kia Optima sped through an intersection before hitting three vehicles, according to the report. The driver is said to have abandoned his wrecked vehicle and running into a nearby wooded area, the newspaper reported.

Austin-Travis County EMS medics said one person was transported to the hospital with incapacitating injuries to his neck and back. Police later said they detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from Burch's vehicle, and spotted a bottle of vodka on the floorboard, according to the newspaper.

Police later located Burch in the area with a severe cut to his head before taking him into custody, the Statesman reported. Police said Burch's license was suspended at the time of the crash after a previous charge of driving while intoxicated, according to the report.
