Man Sues Officers Who Handcuffed Him For Filming A North Austin Police Substation [VIDEO]

Phillip Turner routinely records interactions with police and has another active suit against Round Rock cops on similar grounds.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX -- A local man who routinely records interactions with law enforcement officers as a police watchdog is suing four Austin police officers for arresting him while filming the North Austin substation in June, according to a published report.

Phillip Turner was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car June 9 outside a Sonic Drive-In restaurant across the street from the Austin Police Department North substation at 12425 Lamplight Village Ave, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Turner was placed in handcuffs after refusing to show police his identification until he knew the charge with which he was being charged.

In watching the video, a charge is never invoked by the police officers asking him to stop filming from across the street.

The interaction was captured on Turner's video, which he uploaded to YouTube as he has past encounters with police. His lawsuit was filed in federal court on Tuesday, the Statesman reported.

Turner is no stranger to headlines. Once, he aided police when his video helped Austin police identify and ultimately arrest a man who fired a gun on Sixth Street. He also filed a similar lawsuit in Round Rock, after he was handcuffed for filming outside police headquarters.

In the Round Rock police incident a judge dismissed Turner's clams against the city. However, a judge ruled in early June that the lawsuit against the individual Round Rock police officers could continue.
