Natasha Harper-Madison Wins District 1 Austin Council Race

With 72 percent of the vote, Harper-Madison defeats challenger Mariana Salazar as both vied to replace outgoing incumbent Ora Houston.

NORTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — By a commanding margin, Natasha Harper-Madison won the race for the District 1 Austin City Council seat in a Tuesday runoff election, garnering a whopping 72 percent against challenger Mariana Salazar.

With all precincts reporting, Harper-Madison garnered 71.74 percent of the vote compared to 28.26 percent for Salazar, with ballots cast during the early voting period included. At Tuesday's voting, the victor received 3,404 votes compared to 569 ballots cast for Salazar. The totals are final yet unofficial results until canvassed by the Travis County Clerk.

Both candidates emerged as the biggest voter-getters during the November election when they faced off against former Travis County Democratic Chairman Vincent Harding and four others vying for the council seat.

The council seat became available after after Ora Houston opted not to seek reelection. Harper-Madison will officially begin as a newly minted council member in January.
