- As COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase, some facilities are "now considering scaling back elective surgeries to temper demand." On Jan. 11, Texas State health officials reported "that approximately 76 percent of inpatient beds and 91 percent of intensive care unit beds in hospitals across the state were occupied." Health experts, even if the majority of omicron cases are mild, "the sheer number of people getting infected at once could overwhelm the hospital system," and they warn "that people shouldn't write off preventative measures due to growing evidence that the omicron variant is less severe than previous variants."
