North Austin Homicide Was Likely In Self-Defense, Police Say.
Police ID man shot dead at apartment complex on Saturday evening, saying he started firing at man who pulled out his weapon to return fire.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Monday identified the man who was fatally shot at a North Austin apartment complex on Saturday.
Darwin Jimenez, 21, died shortly after medics arrived to the parking lot of a an apartment complex at 1070 Mearns Meadow Blvd. after being shot Saturday just after 5 p.m.
Police have determined a verbal altercation began when another man pulled into the parking lot. Jimenez and a group of men were sitting inside a car in the parking lot when another man pulled up in his vehicle. The man ignored the taunts before Jimenez and the other men in the group drove up just past the man and stopped their car, police said.

Jimenez and another man then exited their vehicle, with Jimenez pulling out a handgun before firing at the other man, according to police. The other man retreated to his vehicle in retrieving his own handgun and returned fire, striking Jimenez. Police said the man who returned fire is a concealed handgun license holder, and the two men did not know each other.

The Travis County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and determined Jimenez’s cause of death to be the result of a gunshot wound, with the manner of death determined to be homicide. The case is under review by the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, as this incident appears to be self-defense, police said. Officials noted the man who killed Jimenez along with the other people involved are cooperating with police in their investigation.
