North Austin Man Dies In Custody After Police Say He Swallowed Drugs
Chris Givens, 33, died en route to the hospital late Sunday morning after police initially placed him in handcuffs.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Sunday said a man in their custody died after ingesting a substantial amount of drugs and taking ill.
On Saturday (Aug. 5) just before 7 a.m. police, medics from the Austin-Travis County EMS ans Austin Fire Department responded to 501 Deen Avenue for a call about a male who was showing signs of distress after he is said to have swallowed drugs, according to an advisory.
Despite his distress, the man was restrained with a pair of handcuffs "...for the safety of the officers and everyone on scene," police said.

The man was transported to a hospital as his condition worsened, suffering cardiac arrest en route. He died on Sunday at 11:28 a.m., according to police. The man was identified as Chris Givens, who was 33 years of age.
