Hey, North Austin-Pflugerville! Let's get you started this Tuesday with everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

Here are the top stories in North Austin-Pflugerville today:

  1. Elevated ozone levels are usually experienced in Central Texas from March 1 - Nov. 30. During that time, "individuals in a sensitive group" can be greatly impacted by the ozone exposure. 2. Although unemployment is still high, many employers in North Austin-Pflugerville are looking to fill full-time and part-time staff positions, so there are still several opportunities out there. Every week Patch and ZipRecruiter post the latest local jobs in the region, and you can see some of the top jobs currently available in North Austin-Pflugerville and across greater Texas by visiting: (North Austin-Pflugerville Patch)
  3. According to a 2021 report from the Pflugerville Police Department, last year "Pflugerville police stopped and searched Black drivers at a disproportionate rate." Their figures show that "Black people make up about 15 percent of the city's population but accounted for 26 percent of all stops in 2021. In contrast, white people made up 33 percent of total stops, although 40 percent of the Pflugerville population is white. The stop rate of Hispanic people was about even with their population in the city at 31 percent." However, the report said that "racial profiling 'cannot be proved' based on these numbers." Alicia Jackson, president of the advocacy organization Black Pflugerville, said that although she hasn't heard about racial profiling in Pflugerville, "the data regarding what happens to Black drivers after they are stopped is concerning." She added, "Based on this report, it looks like Black 'Pflugervillians' have been arrested at a higher rate." Although "she believes Pflugerville police officers are doing a good job," she thinks "that there's always room for improvement." She ended by saying, "There may not be reports or incidents [of racial bias]," she said, "but doing things right and doing things ethically might not be the same thing."
