Here are the top stories today in North Austin-Pflugerville:
- Starting Wednesday, Feb. 2, Curative in partnership with Hutto ISD will offer PCR tests at Hutto Memorial Stadium, located at 573 Chris Kelley Blvd. The tests will be conducted at a kiosk located in the visitor-side parking lot of the stadium, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and there will be 200 slots available per operational day. PCR, which stands for polymerase chain reaction, is a kind of COVID-19 test that is conducted via a nasal swab, and results normally take 1-2 days to come back. Although there is no out-of-pocket cost, online registration is required through Curative's website. (Community Impact Newspaper)
- The search continues for the missing couple from Pflugerville, Camerina Trujillo Perez, 38 and Luis Montez, 35. According to the Travis County Sheriff's Office, a clear alert was issued on Wednesday, Jan. 26, but it already expired. The couple was last seen together on Monday, Jan. 24 in Pflugerville, but it is believed that the woman "did not willingly leave her family, job and life behind." Her vehicle, a blue 2014 Chevrolet Sonic with Texas license plate FZH-0400, was last seen on Thursday, Jan. 27 "traveling north through Temple." Sheriff Sally Hernandez said, "We need to hear from friends of Camerina and Luis, especially those who have seen or had contact with them on or since January 24th. We want to find answers for their families, and we believe with the help of the public, we can get those answers." If you have any information, please contact the police immediately. - The Texas Regional Mobility Authority Board of Directors held a virtual groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the $612 million 183 North Mobility Project. To commemorate it, they planted trees and honored "local heroes, deemed 'community cultivators,' that nurture our community and help it thrive." The project's goal "is to increase the quality of life for Central Texans by improving mobility, reducing congestion and providing more reliable travel times for transit and emergency responders along a nine-mile stretch of U.S. 183 between State Highway 45 North and Loop 1 (MoPac)." Construction of the project will be in phases, and it is expected to be finished by 2026. For details, visit: (Virtual Builders Exchange)
- Several Austin restaurants will host fundraisers for local bakery, Texas French Bread, which was destroyed in a fire last week. One is Bufalina Due pizzeria, who will raise funds on Tuesday, Feb. 1 and Wednesday, Feb. 2. The restaurant "will donate all proceeds from wine specials and margherita pies, as well as 15 percent of its online wine sales to the GoFundMe campaign, which was organized to support the staff as well as potential future insurance and construction needs." Another one is the Austin chapter of organization Les Dames D'Escoffier, who will be having a bake sale at the East Tiger's South Lamar location on Sunday, Feb. 6 from 4-7 p.m. In addition, "the already-announced bake sale organized by Family Crust Bakery and Dõ" will be on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at Camp East.
