Pflugerville High School Students Headed To State Robot-Building Competition

For the first time in 16 years of competing, local team qualifies for state after finishing first at the regional level.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — A group from Pflugerville High School is headed to statewide competition after winning first in the regional UIL competition during the Texas Boosting Engineering Science and Technology (BEST) contest.

As KVUE reported, the accomplishment is even more significant given the limited amount of time given to build a robot from scratch — 42 days. It takes some of us longer to figure out how to make the microwave oven stop displaying 12:00 all the time.

The team from Pflugerville comprises 18 students, and the them is farming. The 31 teams involved during regional competition were all given the same equipment and concept before being tasked with creating their robot.

The Pflugerville-inspired robot is capable of reaching for specific vegetables before collecting them. In another test, the contraption had to pick up seeds and plant them inside holes before collecting foam representations of corn within a three-minute span of time, as the television station reported.

This marks the first time in 16 years of competition that the Pflugerville team has qualified for state after finishing in the top two teams locally, KVUE noted in its report. The team now is scheduled to travel to Frisco in the northern part of Texas on Dec. 8 for state competition.
