Pflugerville Police Chief Alerts To Phony Check Scam
Chief Jessica Robledo got two checks totaling $5,100, prompting her to alert residents to be on the lookout for emerging fraud.
PFLUGERVILLE, TX — The Pflugerville police chief recently received two fake checks purportedly sent from legitimate businesses, prompting an alert to what appears to be a growing scam targeting residents.
Police Chief Jessica Robledo received the phony checks totaling $5,100, officials said. While both supposedly came from legitimate firms, their owners said they were unaware of them having been issued. The police chief said this form of fraudulent check scam takes many forms, often with a note accompanying the check asking the recipient to transfer money after depositing the money.
Scammers will often use real companies to make the check seem authentic, the chief noted. Fraudulent checks may take weeks to be discovered by banks, and once deposited, the account holder is responsible for the funds transfer.
