Pflugerville Shooting Suspect Arrested In Georgia

Gregory Horton allegedly shot ex-girlfriend through a window of her home last week before fleeing, only to be picked up in Rome, Georgia.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — The suspect who fled after a shooting in Pflugerville last week that left a woman injured was located in Georgia on Saturday, and will be extradited to Travis County to face charges, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

In a Sunday email, Travis County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kristen Dark said Gregory Horton II, 39, was found in Rome, Georgia, after the victim told police she believed it was he she suspected had shot her at her home last Thursday. The July 18 shooting occurred just before 10:30 p.m. along the 19600 block of Wearyall Hill Lane, police said in a previous press advisory.

Evidence indicates the shooter had been lurking in the backyard before he fired shots through a window of the home, Dark said. The woman said the suspect is her ex-boyfriend against whom she has a protective order. An eyewitness subsequently confirmed the suspect's identity, Dark added.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, sheriff's deputies conducted a thorough search of the area — aided by a Texas Department of Public Safety police helicopter and canines from the sheriff's office — but were unable to locate the suspect, Dark said.

But the long arm of the law caught up with Horton, despite his flight. In tandem with marshals, the sheriff's office amplified their search to find Horton in the Georgia town of Rome — some 900 miles east of Pflugerville. Dark said Horton turned himself in to local authorities on July 20, and is currently in custody.

"TCSO’s investigation is ongoing, and the extradition process will begin shortly," the spokeswoman wrote. She was unsure of the victim's condition, but said her injuries were non-life-threatening.

With a population of some 36,300 residents, Rome, Georgia, is the largest city and the county seat of Floyd County. The city is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

From July 19:

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — The search for a suspect in an overnight shooting in Pflugerville continues, a sheriff's office spokesperson told Patch.

The incident occurred Thursday at around 10 p.m. in the 19600 block of Wearyall Hill Lane, Travis County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kristen Dark confirmed with Patch via email.

The spokeswoman said the shooting victim was transported to the hospital with injuries not deemed to be life-threatening. "We do not have a suspect in custody yet, but our investigation thus far indicates this is an isolated incident," Dark wrote in an Friday evening email.

When police use such verbiage (i.e. "isolated incident"), it's meant to suggest the victim and suspect may have known each other as opposed to it being a random incident posing a threat to the public at large.

It's unclear what may have led to the incident that Dark characterized as an aggravated assault. The gender and age of either the suspect or victim was not revealed.
