Pflugerville Youth Aim To Preserve Veterans' Stories

Youth Advisory Council is launching historic preservation project to help capture photographs, stories of local veterans.

PFLUGERVILLE, TEXAS — An effort to preserve military veterans' photos and memories is underfoot by local youth.

The City of Pflugerville Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is launching a historic preservation project called Pflugerville Images of Service to help capture photographs and stories from Pflugerville veterans. Concerned that the memory and history of Pflugerville Veterans and their stories may not be preserved, the newly-created YAC will work with others — Heritage House Museum officials, American Legion Kerlin-Lyerly Post 154 members, city staff — to collect photographs and historical data from Pflugerville residents and relatives who have served our country, according to a press advisory.

The YAC is a high school student program designed to teach youth about city government and engage them in civic affairs. Through the Pflugerville Veterans Images of Service project, the goal is for YAC youth to help capture history for the entire community through the collection of photos from veterans, officials said. Upon completion of the project, the stories and photographs will be preserved in Pflugerville- Images of Service online digital archive at the library and shared via Instagram and social media platforms.

For each photograph provided, the name of the military member, branch, rank, date or year if known, which war, who was President during the time, and a caption explaining the photo should be provided via the photograph submittal form. Photographs will be kept in an online archive at the Library and posted on social media. Photographs will be collected through March 2019. The City reserves the right to accept or deny any photograph.
  • Digital submittals - Digital photos are preferred and may be sent directly to the City at PfImagesofService@pflugervilletx.gov. A photograph consent form will be sent to anyone submitting photographs digitally and must be complete for the photographs to be considered for the collection.
  • Printed photograph submittals - Pflugerville residents may drop off up to 10 photos at the Pflugerville Library in an envelope, with email or phone number, and a caption description of the photographs for consideration for use within the photograph archive. The library will scan these photos into the digital archive and contact original owners to pick up their photos once the pictures are scanned. Each photograph dropped off must include a photographic consent form allowing the photographs to be used in future online, print and digital archives, books or other mediums. The consent forms will be made available at the library and online.
  • In addition to the photographic archive, several veterans will be interviewed for a digital video archive. A Pflugerville Images of Service Reception to highlight the project and feature donated photographs will take place on April 7, 2019 from 3-4 p.m. at the Pflugerville Public Library, 1008 W Pfluger St.
