Police Bomb Squad Responds To Scene Of 'Suspicious Package' In Northwest Austin

Motorists are urged to avoid the area while police are in the process of determining whether the object is dangerous or benign.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX -- The police bomb squad was at the scene of a reported suspicious package on Friday at a hotel, according to media reports.

The incident is occurring at the 9400 block of Stonelake Boulevard after a suspicious package was found at around 5:20 a.m. Officers reported to the scene at about 8:45 a.m., KVUE-TV reported.

The still-active scene is the site of a Courtyard Marriott hotel. KXAN-TV notes the hotel has not been evacuated despite the "suspicious" nature of the package.

More often than not, such calls prompt an impressive show of resources from the Austin Police Department -- armored vehicles, bomb-retrieving robots, officers in combat gear, explosive ordnance disposal personnel -- but often end up being the result of a benign package that just seemed out of place (thus suspicious) and left unattended.

But during the investigation, adjacent streets are closed up to entering or exiting traffic to and from the area, sometimes for hours. Such is the situation in this case, as police are advising motorists to avoid the area until the all-clear is given.
