Police ID Man Killed While Trying To Cross I-35 In North Austin
Michael Mayes, 50, was killed at he tried crossing the 100 block of the interstate going southbound on Tuesday just before 3 p.m.
AUSTIN, TX — The pedestrian who was killed this week while trying to cross Interstate 35 in North Austin was identified by police on Thursday.
Michael Mayes, 50, was killed at he tried crossing the 100 block of the interstate going southbound on Tuesday just before 3 p.m. Police said the driver who hit him stopped before rendering immediate first aid before Mayes was taken to a hospital where he later died. The road was closed for about two hours to accommodate a police investigation in the wreck's aftermath.
No charges are expected to be filed against the driver, police said. As they investigate the case, detectives ask anyone with information to reach them by calling (512) 974-8544 or submitting tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

Police said the incident marked the 26th fatal traffic crash so far this year,resulting in 27 fatalities. The toll already has exceeded that of last year for the comparable period, when 22 fatal traffic crashes resulting in 23 fatalities were reported, police added.
