Police ID Pedestrian Struck In Fatal Accident In North Austin

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the pedestrian killed while crossing North Lamar Boulevard on Tuesday evening.
Luis Gabriel Chavez, 53, was struck at around 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 as he attempted to cross the street in the 8900 block of North Lamar Boulevard, police said. He was transported to the hospital after being hit, but died a short time later, officials noted.
A preliminary investigation shows that a blue 2007 Hyundai was traveling southbound in the left lane of North Lamar Boulevard at less than 45 mph on road conditions that were slippery due to day-long showers. The driver was cited for not having either a driver's license or insurance, police said.

The death marked Austin’s 61st fatal traffic crash and the 62nd fatality of 2016, police noted. At this time in 2015, there were 86 traffic fatalities in Austin.
