Police ID Teen Bicyclist Killed In North Austin

Detectives determine Minh-Tan Pham, 17, disregarded yield and stop signs before veering onto East Parmer Lane with 60 mph speed limit.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police on Wednesday identified the teenage bicyclist who was killed in North Austin over the weekend after a high-speed stretch of roadway.

In a press advisory, police said Minh-Tan Pham, 17, was biking northbound on Yager Lane when he disregarded posted stop and yield signs before veering onto the 1600 block of East Parmer Lane just before 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9. As Pham began to enter the left lane of westbound traffic, a stretch of roadway with a 60-mile-per-hour speed limit, he crossed in front of a blue, 2012 Toyota Camry, police said.

Following the collision, Minh-Tan Pham was transported to St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. It's unclear if Minh-Tan was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, a police spokeswoman told Parch.

"I spoke with the detective who worked the case," Tara Long replied in an email after a Patch inquiry. "While we can’t definitively say whether he was wearing a helmet because he was transported before the investigator arrived, there was no one at the scene who mentioned seeing him in one."

Police said in their press advisory the driver of the Camry remained on scene awaiting the arrival of police, who continue to investigate the incident.
