Post-Its Notes, Scotch Tape Maker 3M Closing North Austin Plant

NORTH AUSTIN, TEXAS — Minnesota-based manufacturing firm 3M — makers of Post-It notes and scotch tape — is slated to close its facility in the northwest side of the city, throwing about 120 employees out of work, according to reports.

The plant is scheduled to close by the end of next year, the Austin American-Statesman and other media outlets reported. Upon its closure, the 220,000-square-foot facility that's been a local fixtures in North Austin since the early 1980s will be put up for sale, according the the report.

Company officials attributed the imminent closure to changes in its corporate portfolio and consolidation of some operations, the newspaper reported. The company in June sold its fiber optics and communications markets division to industrial and science products manufacturing company Corning Inc. for $870 million, according to reports. A spokeswoman told the Statesman the local plant's operations focused largely on fiber optics and communications products.
