Real-Life Catfish: Man Trying To Meet Woman From Dating Site Gets Robbed Instead

Victim was relieved of $1,000 after inadvertently meeting with two men instead of 'Dede,' woman he thought he was meeting for a date.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — A man recently responding to what turned out to be a fake dating profile was instead extorted out of money by two suspects he met at the rendezvous point, according to a published report.

The victim had been communicating with a person he believed was a 20-year-old woman, according to an arrest affidavit referenced by the Austin American-Statesman in a report. The victim told police he starting communicating with "Dede," supposedly the woman who captured his attention on a dating website called "Hot or Not," according to the report.

But it was only hot water the victim found. Arriving at an apartment unit at 6800 McNeil Dr. the woman said was her residence, the man instead was met by two men, later identified as Oliver Orr, 22, and Myles Martin, 22, both of Austin, the affidavit reads.

Martin is said to have told the victim he had been communicating with his underage sister, according to the report. To avoid the wrath of his uncle's vengeance (in the form of cutting off the victim's fingers), Martin told the victim he'd have to fork over some cash, the affidavit details. A visit under duress to an ATM yielded $600 and a stop at the victim's father's home secured another $400, the report indicates.

After the victim contacted police, they were able to corroborate his story with surveillance camera footage at the ATM.

Orr and Martin were subsequently arrested and charged with robbery by threat, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. They were both being held in the Williamson County Jail as of Friday with bail set at $100,000 each, according to jail records.

The apartment on McNeil Drive is in a part of Austin within Williamson County.
