ICYMI: 'Run with Heroes 5K' Honoring Fallen Emergency First Responders Scheduled Sunday [UPDATED]
Preregistration deadline for event benefiting Special Olympics of Texas has passed, but runners can also enter race on day of the event.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX -- The 9th annual "Run with the Heroes 5K" benefiting Special Olympics of Texas is happening this weekend.
The event will be staged at Camp Mabry, 2200 W. 35th St., on Sunday, Nov. 13, beginning at 8 a.m. The race honors fallen heroes and their families from the fire, EMS and police first responder agencies, organizers explained. This year's honorees are Sgt. Chris Kelley from the Hutto Police Department and STAR Flight nurse Kristin McClain.

“The race brings together our community and our first responders from EMS, Fire and Police, to honor our fallen heroes, support their families and give thanks to those who continue to strive to keep our community safe,” said Art Acevedo, Chief of Police for the Austin Police Department. “It is a chance for everyone to come out and run with their heroes, support first responders, as well as support Special Olympians.”

McClain fell to her death on April 27 during a nighttime rescue attempt of an injured hiker in the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The 46-year-old nurse was part of a team responding to the rescue call when she fell from the Star Flight helicopter. In June of last year, Kelly, 38, died after a suspect took control of his vehicle and backed over him during a struggle for the steering wheel.

Runners of all levels (beginners through advanced) are invited to participate and compete. Online registration ends Thursday, Nov. 10, but participants can also register at the race site on the day of the event for $35. For more information, click here.
