School District Poised To Start Building Its 21st Elementary School

Plans for new school come less than two years since the opening of Dearing Elementary.

NORTH AUSTIN-PFLUGERVILLE, TX -- Other than housing starts, the best barometer of city growth is seen in the number of new school construction. By that measure, the Pflugerville ISD is clearly responding to expansion with its 21st elementary school slated to open next fall.

School board members discussed the new school during a Jan. 7 workshop, reports the Austin American-Statesman. Construction on the still-unnamed school is scheduled to begin this spring and open by next year.

It’ll be located on district-owned land north of Cele Middle School in a fast-growing part of town.

“It is an exciting time to be a part of this community, and we are thrilled to move forward with the construction of our next elementary school,” Alex Torrez said in a statement. “For good reason, families continue to flock here and we will continue to provide quality education for all our students, present and future.”

The single-story campus will encompass 109,000 square feet of space. It will fit 800 students, some of them transferring from Riojas and Rowe Lane elementary schools among others.

Construction on the new school comes less than two years since the opening of the district’s 20th elementary school, Audrey and Leonard Dearing Elementary. Located on Gattis School Road, Dearing Elementary opened in May 2014.

In a previous article for the Pflugerville Pflag, a sister publication to the Statesman, parents and teachers gave Dearing Elementary positive reviews. One of its namesakes, Audrey Dearing, was a founding member of the Friends of the Pflugerville Library from which the city’s original library originated.

In the same month that school opened, voters approved a $287 million bond package to finance construction of two new elementary schools, another high school, a regional stadium and improvements to various buildings throughout the district.

The successful bond referendum was the biggest in the history of the district, which has never seen a schools-related bond issuance rejected by voters.

Appropriately for a district experiencing such brisk growth, a teacher job fair has been scheduled April 2. The job fair will take place at Pflugerville High School.

Ahead of the job fair, district officials have set up Internet portals to register to attend the event for those seeking teaching positions and another to check listings of current teaching vacancies districtwide.
