🌱 Summer Tunnel Project Plans + Pflugerville Now A Hot Location
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in North Austin-Pflugerville.
Good morning, people of North Austin-Pflugerville! It's me again, Gabriela Couvillion, your host of the North Austin-Pflugerville Daily.
First, today's weather:
Nice with plenty of sun. High: 79 Low: 51.
Here are the top stories today in North Austin-Pflugerville:
- The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) and The Boring Company (TBC) recently met "for a potential tunnel project in the area" this summer. Brian Wilson, NCTCOG spokesperson, said, "The North Central Texas Council of Governments is working on a process that will allow us to have discussions with transportation technology companies and integrate them into the public transportation planning process." Most Elon Musk companies "have set roots in Texas, including The Boring Company," and according to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation documents, "Musk's tunneling startup occupies an office building in Pflugerville." That office recently "revealed that the tunneling company already moved on to Phase 2 of its renovation on the building." For more details on the project visit: (Teslarati)
- South by Southwest usually brings a lot of business for small food truck vendors in Austin, but unfortunately, so far it has been slow for some food truck owners, despite the fact that this year the event is being held in person again. Candice Naidoo, owner of South African Food Affair, said, "We were hoping to see lines." She added, "I think that's what every food truck owner wants: just lines and sell out and make people happy." - Fifteen years ago, Pflugerville "was a sleepy community, with few amenities and few reasons to visit" but since then, a lot has happened in the Travis County city. "The construction of State Route 130 and a sudden influx of restaurants, shopping malls and cultural sites" have made it "one of the hottest locations in one of the hottest states in the country" and "today, Pflugerville is home to about 75,000 people and an impressive list of corporations, including Facebook and Amazon, who like the idea of calling the city, about 10 miles north of downtown Austin, home." According to reports from The Pflugerville Community Development Corp. (PCDC), "nine projects were announced in 2021, including deals with Brandt, The Boring Company, Facebook, MDC Precision and Walker Engineering" and "in 2020, eight projects were announced, including deals with Home Depot, Amazon, Armbrust, Essentium and Curative." The 2021 projects accounted "for a commitment to 602,000 square feet of space, 1,561 new jobs and a capital investment of about $26 million" and 2020 projects accounted "for 4.2 million square feet of space, 1,478 new jobs and a capital investment of $317 million." Per city officials, "Pflugerville's location, combined with its growing amenities, transportation network and support, makes the city an ideal place for people to live and work."
