Teen Dies In North Austin Trying To Cross Interstate 35

Medics originally placed victim's age as being in his 20s in Sunday's incident, but police confirm he was a 15-year-old boy.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — The pedestrian who died this past Sunday while attempting to cross Interstate 35 was only 15 years old, police have disclosed.

On Tuesday, police said Sajjad Zaid Alqassab, 15, died after a car traveling in the left lane of the 13100 block of north I-35 struck him as he ran across the highway. Initially, EMS medics estimated the victim to be in his 20s, officials tweeted at the time.

According to information provided by police in their news advisory, Alqassab would have turned 16 on Dec. 19. The young man was rushed to a Round Rock hospital after being struck, but was pronounced dead shortly after the collision.

The tragic incident marked Austin’s 66th fatal traffic crash and the 71st fatality of 2017, police said. At this time in 2016, there were 71 fatal traffic crashes and 73 traffic fatalities, officials added.
