The deadline comes at a time of robust voter registration ahead of a historic election pitting Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump. County officials already have surpassed their goal of 90 percent of its eligible voters that was set in January, officials said Monday.
“Since the 2012 election, we’ve added over 80,000 registered voters, which helps us get over our 90 percent voter registration goal,” Bruce Elfant, the Travis County tax assessor-collector and voter registrar, told the Austin American-Statesman.
The totals exceed registration for the 2012 election, when the county posted 635,000 people (or 82 percent) of eligible voters registered. Since that time, the tax office created various innovative methods to ease the process of registration: a text-to-register option, partnerships with private groups and public entities to promote voter registration, and voter registration campaigns in local schools, Elfant told the newspaper.
By Monday, the tax assessor’s office had 713,871 registered voters, or about 89.99 percent. But by late in the day, the office still had roughly 11,000 applications it still had not processed, the Statesman reported.
By midnight today, there will be some 100,000 new registered voters than the county had for the 2012 election, Elfant told the newspaper.
