UT-Austin Standout Volleyball Player Faces Drunk Driving Charge

Micaya White, 20, was pulled over for driving without her headlights on and following too closely before failing a sobriety test in March.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — A volleyball standout at the University of Texas at Austin is facing charges of drunken driving dating to a March arrest, according to a published report.

Micaya White, 20, was arrested in March after police pulled her over just after 2 a.m. along the 300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Austin American-Statesman reported. She was initially pulled over for driving without her headlights on and following too closely, according to the report.

According to an arrest affidavit, White acknowledged having consumed two vodka shots and a Sprite at around 8 p.m. the previous night after failing a sobriety test and smelling of alcohol. According to the report, a breathalyzer test wasn't administered.

The newspaper reported that an ambulance was dispatched to the arrest scene to treat White with what was described as a panic attack the night of her arrest. She subsequently was charged with DWI and released on a $2,500 bail after spending the night in jail, according to the report.

The athlete is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4.

White's coach, Jerritt Elliott, released a prepared statement on the arrest: “We and campus administration have been aware of the situation involving Micaya White since it occurred. It has been addressed and we are managing this internally. We support Micaya in working through this process.”

An outside hitter from Frisco, White was a first-team All-American last year and was named the Big 12’s freshman of the year, the Statesman reported. She was named to the NCAA all-tournament team, helping the Longhorns reach the national title match before falling to Stanford, the newspaper noted.
