Vodka, Barbecue and Cars: Pflugerville Seniors Have Been Busy

Senior citizen group organizes several outings, has more planned for the coming months.

Pflugerville senior citizens know how to have a good time.

Pflugerville seniors at the Pflugerville Recreation Center are taking in the best that central Texas has to offer.

Recently, groups of seniors visited the Dripping Springs Vodka Distillery for an educational tour and went to Lockhart, the “barbecue capital of Texas,” to eat at Kreuz, Blacks and Smitty’s. The group also toured the Texas Toyota Plant on October 1.

These outings give seniors an outlet for social interaction and physical activity, Michelle Richardson, the coordinator for senior programming, told Patch.

“A lot of it is for the social interactions. Interaction helps them stay more alert, more cognitive and certain activity can help ward off mental illnesses such as dementia,” Richardson said. “They don’t get that interaction that they used to on a daily basis, so it gives them that outlet to connect with other people.”

Richardson plans events based off input from the seniors and her eight years of experience working with seniors. Richardson also said she likes to take the seniors to support local businesses.

And the fun isn’t over.

The group is planning outings for November and December, including overnight trips to Palo Duro Canyon and a christmas & vintage wine train in Grapevine.
