Volunteers Needed To Plant Saplings In North Austin
'Ready, Set, Plant!' project aims to help restore native tree and shrub diversity, reduce water runoff and improve creek water quality.
NORTH AUSTIN, TX — TreeFolks is looking for volunteers to help plant saplings in East Austin this weekend.
Since 1989, TreeFolks volunteers and staff have planted more than 2 million trees in Central Texas at schools and parks, in medians, right of ways, community gardens, and greenbelts. On Jan. 13, volunteers are needed to plant the trees at the 1112 Hermitage Drive., from 9 a.m. to noon.
The effort is a project of "Ready, Set, Plant!" a partnership among the City of Austin Forestry Division, City of Austin Watershed Protection, Keep Austin Beautiful and TreeFolks Inc. The goal is to plant saplings that won't require irrigation to help restore native tree and shrub diversity and reduce water runoff while improving water quality in city creeks.

Those wishing to volunteer should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes as they will be working in areas that have tall vegetation along the creek. The potential presence of poison ivy heightens the need for such attire. Volunteers also are urged to bring along their bottled water, hat and sunscreen. Water, coffee, light refreshments, gloves and tools will be provided.
Additionally, planting leaders are needed to lead volunteer planting crews at planting events. Leaders meet half an hour early to help organize tools and get special instructions, then provide direct supervision of planting volunteers. If you would like to sign up to be a leader, email volunteer@treefolks.org
