Windermere Pool In Pflugerville Now A Heated Water Amenity

The hot water is especially beneficial to seniors looking to engage in low-impact aerobic exercises.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX -- The mayor announced at the last council meeting on March 8 that the Windermere Pool is now heated, making it a year-round amenity especially beneficial to senior citizens.

Back in October 2015, City Council members approved spending $40,000 for enhancements to the pool, including making it a heated facility.

In a prior interview, Mayor Jeff Coleman espoused the benefits of heated pools for seniors while still allowing its use at colder temperatures for swim teams.

In coming up with the plan to convert the pool to allow for heated water, the mayor drew inspiration from his parents, he told the Pflugerville Pflag newspaper in a prior interview. During a telephone conversation with him, they raved about the benefits of low-impact, aerobic exercises they had just starting performing.

“They called to tell me how much of an athletic outlet it was for them,” Coleman said of his parents, who live in Rockport. “It’s not just physical but social.”

Coleman immediately thought of his own community with a growing senior population drawn to the city in their retirment.

“A significant percentage — some 25 percent to 30 percent — of people I insure are 55 or older,” Coleman, an insurance agent, said. “Many are moving to the Pflugerville area to be near their children and grandchildren.”

Pflugerville has three city-owned pools, including Gilleland Creek Pool, the only heated one. The other city-owned pool is Mentzer Pool, the most attended aquatic facility among the three. Mentzer Pool, meanwhile, features slides and a children’s area and not really designed for swimming.
