Would-be Thieves Crash Truck Into North Austin Store

The smash-and-grab robbery nearly caused the destruction of a jewelry store.

The plan went off without a hitch — almost.

After crashing a pickup truck into TJ Jewelry in North Austin, a crew of prospective jewelry thieves soon found out there was nothing worth stealing. All of the display cases were already empty.

The attempted burglary happened around 4 a.m. Saturday, the owner of TJ Jewelry, located at North Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 290, told KVUE.

In a surveillance video, a truck is seen ramming through the front doors of the store, destroying display cases, walls and even the ceiling before crashing to a stop.

Shortly after, a black Ford Explorer pulls up to the store letting three men in hoodies out. After a quick look around the store, four men escape in the Explorer. They left the truck in the store.

The owner told KVUE that the entire store was nearly destroyed.

“The police were already gone, the vehicle left in the store was towed out of here by the police,” the owner told KVUE. “All I saw was a case number and a detective’s name on a piece of paper.”

The owner of TJ Jewelry could not be reached for a comment, it is unclear at this time why there was no jewelry in the store at the time of the attempted burglary.
