ALVIN, TX — An Alvin ISD high school student is staking her claim to fame as a singer, but she’s doing it on the other side of the world.

Akhila Mamandur, a 17-year old high school senior, showcased her singing talent in an audition tape she sent in to compete in a South Indian singing competition.

Much to her surprise, Mamandur was among those selected, KTRK reported.

Mamandur won the singing competition and is now getting offers to sing in movies produced in India, all before she receives her high school diploma.

However, the honor student is focused on school and has hopes of becoming a dentist.

But she is using her amazing talent to raise money for school children in India by singing with her former contestants, and has raised thousands.

The goal, she told KTRK, was to raise enough to help 2,000 children in India.
