Battleship Texas Monument To Reopen To Tourist This Weekend

Officials closed the monument last weekend after a severe hull breach was discovered below the water line.

LA PORTE TX — The iconic Battleship Texas is projected to open to tourist this weekend, a week after it was forced to close after a massive hull breach was discovered on the ship’s starboard side, about 15 feet below the waterline.

The leak was discovered in a hole of about six to eight inches on Sunday afternoon, and was noticed with the ship began to list to starboard (right) side, officials said. Officials said Friday that the monument will reopen on Saturday.

Repair crews spent Sunday pumping thousands of gallons of water to repair the hull breach.

Officials have made several major repairs to the battleship in recent years, and have indicate the best course of action to maintain the hull’s integrity is to dry berth the ship, KTRK reported.
