Judge Fines ExxonMobil More Than $21 Million For Clean Air Act Violations

Judge rules energy giant assessed violations at Baytown Facility, from the state and Harris County dating back to 2005.

BAYTOWN, TX -- A federal judge fied ExxonMobil more than $21 million for violations of the Clean Air Act standards at its Baytown facility.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner ruled Wednesday that ExxonMobil has assessed $21.3 million in penalties from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and Harris County.

The energy giant has paid $1.4 million in penalties, leaving $19.9 million.

ExxonMobil was sued by the Sierra Club and Environment Texas Citizens Lobby Inc., in 2010 alleging ExxonMobil wasn’t doing enough to reduce emissions at its Baytown facility between 2005 and 2013.

The Baytown facility, one of the largest refineries of its kind, is about 30 miles east of Houston and employs more than 7,000 employees.

ExxonMobil released a statement expressing their disagreement with the ruling and will consider other legal options.
