La Marque Community Stages Rally Against Violence

Galveston County has recorded 14 homicides for 2017: Police

LA MARQUE, TX — Residents in La Marque took to the streets this weekend to protest an uptick in violent crime in their city.

Clad in red t-shirts, dozens of residents lined FM 1765 held signs calling for an end to violence in their streets. (Want to get daily updates about traffic news and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

Among those who were there, were Sheree Lawrence, whose son Rodney Stoll, was killed in May.

Stoll, 23, was shot to death Alphonse Laforet shortly after midnight on May 24, after he and Alphonse Laforet began arguing, which escalated into a gun battle.

Witnesses told investigators that Laforet shot Stoll in the back, when Stoll tried to run away.

Laforet has since been charged with murder and is in the Galveston County Jail.

Lawrence said being there helps her to channel her grief into bringing the community together and seeking justice for her son, she told KTRK.

So far, there have been 14 homicides reported in Galveston County in 2017.
