Pearland Teen Wins Election To Pearland ISD School Board
Michael Floyd, 18, defeated two-term incumbent Rusty DeBode in the Pearland ISD School Board election on Saturday.

PEARLAND, TX — An 18-year old Pearland ISD student became one of the youngest elected officials in the United States after winning a seat on the Pearland ISD board of trustees.
Michael Floyd, a senior at Dawson High School, defeated incumbent Rusty DeBorde by about 500 votes in Saturday’s election.

Although he was initially driven to run based on the district’s stance on transgender students and their choice of bathrooms, and he said he also wanted to bring a student perspective to the board of trustees as well as greater transparency to the board.
Floyd, who serves as his class president on the student council, said he knocked on doors in the neighborhoods each weekend to get his message out.

The old-school method of meeting constituents face-to-face seemed to work with Floyd taking 54 percent of the votes.
Floyd is expect to be sworn in later this month.
Floyd plans to attend the University of Houston in the fall where he plans to major in political science.
