PASADENA TX — There’s a cavernous hole in the front of the John Phelps Courthouse in Pasadena that’s been boarded up with plywood.

It’s proof that thieves will go to extremes — including smashing through a courthouse — to get to an ATM machine.

That’s been the case with two literal smash and grab burglaries attempts in five days.

The first attempt was made on Saturday night, when thieves smashed through the front of the courthouse on South Richey Road, presumably with a truck, and tried unsuccessfully to take the ATM machine.

All they did was leave a huge mess, and officials fastened sheets of thick plywood over the gaping hole.

Undeterred, thieves returned early Wednesday and smashed through the plywood wall, into the courthouse.

Unable to make off with the ATM machine, they instead forced it open and found there was no cash inside.

Officials said the cash was removed on Tuesday by the ATM company.

Meanwhile the hole in the front of the courthouse is once again covered up with plywood sheets until repairs can be made.
