City Officials Set To Break Ground On Long-Planned Sports Complex

The $16.5 million venue is funded through a mix of city funds and bond revenue.

ROUND ROCK, TX -- Round Rock city officials will host a groundbreaking event for the long-anticipated Multipurpose Field & Soccer Complex next week.

Members of the Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department, City Council and the Convention and Visitors Bureau will be on hand for the Jan. 12 ceremony at Old Settlers Park located at 3300 Palm Valley Blvd. The event will take place northwest of the Lakeview Pavilion and Festival Area.

The complex is funded through a $16.5 million bond proposition approved by voters in 2014. An additional $6.5 million in funding came from the hotel motel occupancy tax fund and another $4 million from the general self finance construction fund.

The soccer complex is funded by the 2014 general obligation bond at $3 million.

Once it’s completed, the complex will house four natural grass multipurpose fields; one natural grass championship field; four synthetic turf multipurpose fields; and one synthetic turf championship field.

Additional features include a parking area, sports lighting, restroom/concessions building, spectator amenities and a playground.

The soccer complex will involve renovation of an existing five soccer fields to create a pair of multipurpose fields and three individual soccer fields. Replacement of the existing topsoil and sod will be undertaken, as well as upgrades to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Plans call for the the multipurpose field complex to be completed first to allow local leagues to move to the multipurpose complex while construction on the soccer complex occurs. Construction of the multipurpose field complex is scheduled to be open by the spring of 2017, while the soccer complex is slated to open the following year.

β€œThis landmark new addition to Old Settlers Park will be utilized by Round Rock residents during the week and will play host to major sports tournaments programmed by the Round Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau on the weekends, generating major tax dollars that help local city services,” officials wrote in announcing the upcoming groundbreaking.

The venue will enable the convention and visitors bureau greater flexibility in hosting a variety of sporting events, including additional soccer tournaments and more diverse sporting events such as lacrosse, rugby, football and other sports.

The firm of Schrickel, Rollins and Associates Inc. will serve as design consultant for the project, while Joerie General Contractors will serve as contractor.
