Round Rock To Replace 7,000-Plus Street Signs

Over the next 9 months, 7,120 traffic control signs will be replaced to come into compliance with federal standards, city officials said.

ROUND ROCK, TX — City crews are poised to replace more than 7,000 street signs in order to come into compliance with federal provisions.

"Traffic control signs throughout the City will be easier to see in the coming months," city officials wrote on the municipal website. "Over the next nine months, 7,120 traffic control signs will be replaced to come into compliance with federal retroreflectivity standards."

City crews are replacing the signs which were provided by Centerline Supply for $250,729.37, according to the city's notice. The signs are being replaced to comply with sign retroreflectivity levels laid out in the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), officials added.

The MUTCD provides for six methods that cities can use to maintain traffic sign retroreflectivity at or above the minimum levels, city officials explained. The city selected the blanket replacement option which allows for sign replacement every 7-10 years, officials noted. "This option does not require an annual retroreflectivity scan which saves the city $105,000 annually," city officials wrote.

City officials previously enlisted Transmap Corporation to classify the full traffic sign inventory and integrate the information with the city’s existing Geographic Information System, according to the advisory. This inventory assists city staff in tracking and maintaining sign conditions throughout the city, officials added. .
