Wisconsin-Based Water Park Operator Reveals Plans To Build In Round Rock

The planned site marks the Texas entry for Kalahari Resorts and Conventions and its fourth destination overall.

ROUND ROCK, TX -- A Wisconsin-based theme park operator announced plans to build a new venue in Round Rock, company officials announced Wednesday.

Wisconsin Wells-based Kalahari Resorts and Conventions describes itself as an operator of African-themed venues featuring indoor waterparks, guest rooms, full-service spas, fully equipped fitness center, on-site restaurants, retail shops and state-of-the-art conference center.

The privately owned theme park company is closely held, controlled as a family enterprise. The Round Rock location would mark the company's entry into the Southwest U.S. market and its fourth water park overall, company officials said.

Company owner Todd Nelson made the announcement for the planned Kalahari Resorts and Conventions site in Round Rock to a group attended by state and local dignitaries at the company's home base. At the press conference, he detailed the plans for Round Rock include much of the standard company fare: Up to 1,000 guest rooms, indoor and outdoor water parks, restaurants, a family entertainment center, spa and convention center.

“We are incredibly excited to bring our authentically African resort experience to the Southwest for the first time,” Nelson said. “The city of Round Rock has been incredibly welcoming, and we look forward to finalizing plans to officially become a part of this great community.”

In a prepared statement, Round Rock Mayor Alan McGraw said the project would be a boost to the local economy.
"We are thrilled Kalahari has chosen Round Rock for its first expansion into the Southwest," Mayor Alan McGraw said. "This game-changing project will be a great benefit to our community, continuing our efforts to diversify the local economy. We look forward to working with the Nelson family to bring their vision to reality in Round Rock."
The plans comes on the heels of the opening of the company's Pocono Mountains property in July 2015. Another location in Sandusky, Ohio, was opened in 2005, and the Waterpark Capital of the World in Wisconsin Dells opened in 2000.
