Book Art + Love Tito's + Diwali Lights + Spirits + Lebanese Food

Stay informed about everything going down near you with the San Antonio Daily.

Good day, neighbors! It's me again, Gabriela Couvillion, your host of the San Antonio Daily.

First, today's weather:

Humid with some sun returning. High: 89 Low: 70.

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. When Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder was in Nevada, she would see coyotes everywhere. "I remember seeing them at the drive-in movie theater eating spilled popcorn and hotdogs off the ground,' she says. In 2014, while exploring a Nevada ghost town, she saw "a coyote skeleton decaying in a rusty barrel." Suddenly an idea "circled in Schroeder's head and inspired the name Coyote Bones Press, the niche imprint she founded the following year." Her book art involves "meticulously handmade boxes, found objects, unusual printing techniques and wry nods to games and magic tricks" and has been featured in exhibitions all around the U.S. To learn more about the artist and see some of her contributions to the world of book art, visit: (San Antonio Current)
  2. If you mix Texas vodka with fresh community garden produce, you get Love Tito's! Lindsey Bates, communications manager, said, "We saw the success of the farm that we built by our distillery and its increasing access to fresh and healthy foods for our employees, and we're like, how can we bring this to other communities?" So in 2019, Love Tito's started its block to block community garden program, which "now reaches 28 cities, including San Antonio." This year they partnered with Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas to renovate and help out 10 community gardens in San Antonio. Projects include new garden boxes, irrigation systems, "and lots of volunteer man power." The project serves as a reminder that food doesn't just come from stores. It also comes from the land and through lots of hard work. For a list of Bexar County community gardens being supported and for more information on the project, visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
  3. San Antonio's Hemisfair will be shining brighter than ever during the 13th annual Diwali SA Festival of Lights, which returns live "after occurring remotely in 2020 due to COVID-19." The event celebrates the Indian culture and the cultural tradition of "Diwali, an Indian holiday that coincides with the Hindu New Year," which "celebrates the triumph of good over evil, when Rama defeated the evil spirit Ravana." This year "a drum line featuring drummers from 12 different regions of India will lead a procession" from Alamo Street to the Tower of the Americas on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 6 - 10 p.m. There will also be music, live entertainment, and new attractions and activities for everyone to enjoy. (mySA)
  4. Maverick Whiskey is surrounded by history and spirits, and Halloween is the perfect time to visit the spooky San Antonio venue. Located downtown at 115 Broadway, "the bar/restaurant/distillery sits on what was originally Samuel Maverick's (signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence) homestead just steps away from the Alamo." The building is said to be haunted by ghosts, "and it is the first stop on the San Antonio city ghost tour known as Nightly Spirits." Make your reservations now for a public ghost tour or reserve a private VIP spot (maximum of 6 people) ghost tour. Call (210) 447-7010 or go to https://maverickwhiskey.com/tours-and-events/ to book your spot. For more information, visit: (flicksandfood.com)
  5. If you're in a mood for a different and unique food flavor, plan to go this weekend to the Lebanese Food Festival, "a unique in-door and out-door festival where people can expect Lebanese cuisine, wine, beer, folk dancers and performances." The festival, which started on Friday, Oct. 22, "is taking place on 6070 Babcock Road." It will also be held on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 1 - 11 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 24 from 12 - 5 p.m. The cost is $3 and $1 for kids under 12 years old.
