SAN ANTONIO (September 2, 2021) – During Tuesday’s City Council Budget Work Session Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda emphasized the need for opportunity and preparedness.

Tuesday’s session focused on Economic and Workforce Development, as well as Center City and 3-1-1 operations. The emphasis was specifically on digital opportunities for students and businesses, as well as upward mobility opportunities for the local workforce.

“We want to make sure that we build targeted bridges across the digital divide as well as improve upskilling opportunities for workers in San Antonio,” said the Councilwoman. “A renewed effort is needed to help businesses enter the digital age and our local workforce requires help with as much energy as we use to recruit new companies.”

The focus on preparedness highlighted the seven additional 3-1-1 customer service positions included in the budget, and how those new positions will help the call center handle emergency situations such as Winter storm Uri.

City staff outlined an all-hands approach regarding the 3-1-1 call center during emergencies. “It would be good to learn more about the triggering events for the all-hands operation and how the trigger doesn't have to be city-wide,” said the Councilwoman. “As chair of the Public Safety Committee, a briefing on the emergency triggers and how they work would be appreciated.”
